Background
In 2004, San Francisco was faced with an elephant crisis - elephants at the San Francisco Zoo were dying from health problems created by the inadequate and inhumane zoo conditions in which they had been held for decades.
The Zoo refused to act and the Board of Supervisors was forced to step in to rescue two of the four elephants.
Two elephants prematurely died at the Zoo, before the last two elephants (Tinkerbelle and Lulu) could be moved to the Performing Animal Welfare Sanctuary in San Andreas, CA.
Unfortunately Tinkerbelle was in such poor condition when she was moved to the sanctuary that she died just a few months after her move. However, Lulu today thrives at the sanctuary and now lives with four other African elephants.
